Research a range of photograph albums and slipcases and record the research using visual and written evidence (e.g. sketches, scans and photographs to show the use of colour, technique and materials etc.).

Requirements

• Browse 'hand sewn photo album', or similar phrase, on the web. For example, try these articles:
  • Nineteenth Century Photograph Albums. Article by Olivia Premanis. Guild of Book Workers volume XXX1X no 2 page 24
  • Photo Album Structures, 1850-1960. Article by Richard Horton. Guild of Book Workers Journal volume XXX11 no 1 page 32
• Investigate the structure of old family photo albums
• Buy some photo albums from a charity shop or car boot. Deconstruct them and compare how they were made.
• Visit other binders, second hand bookshops, libraries, museums & exhibitions.
• Investigate contemporary albums styles, for example Shrigley Binding, The Elbum (Benjamin Elbel)  Stick Album (Edwin Heim, Nadine Werner)

Tips for documenting your evidence

• Your research does not need to be exhaustive. You need sufficient evidence to show that you have a reasonable depth of knowledge, with particular reference for the need for, and the different types of, guards.
• Record what you observe when you examine or deconstruct an album or a slipcase.
• Include evaluative comments related to the research.
• Reference your sources.
• Record visits to retail outlets, exhibitions, libraries
• Record the books, journals and websites consulted.
